Overview
What this trip is
This isn't a twenty-minute tourist loop. You get your own sled and a team of four to six Alaskan huskies, and over four days you drive them through frozen forest, across lakes and over open fells, sleeping in log cabins with no electricity and a wood-fired sauna.
You're also the crew. You'll harness your dogs in the morning, feed them at night before you feed yourself, fetch water from a hole in the ice and split the firewood. That shared work is why this costs hundreds less than a catered version — and it's most people's favourite part.
Dog sledding is the priciest trip we run, because forty well-cared-for dogs cost what they cost. We've trimmed everything else.

Day by day
Itinerary
Day 1Arrive Kittilä
Shared transfer to the kennel (about 1 hr). Get fitted with Arctic clothing, meet the dogs, dinner and briefing at the guesthouse.
Day 2Sled school and first run25 km
Learn to harness, brake, steer and look after your team, then a first half-day on forest trails to the first wilderness cabin.
Day 3Across the lakes40 km
A full day over frozen lakes and through old pine forest. Dog chores, sauna, stew.
Day 4Onto the fells40 km
Climb above the treeline for the big open views, weather permitting, then down to a riverside cabin.
Day 5Back to the kennel30 km
A last run home, say goodbye to your team, hot showers at last and a farewell dinner.
Day 6Depart
Morning transfer to Kittilä airport.

What’s basic about this trip
- It's physical. You run or push uphill, brake downhill, and work outdoors at −10 to −30 °C.
- Cabins have shared bunkrooms, outdoor dry toilets and no running water or mains power.
- Trail distances depend on snow, temperature and the dogs. The musher decides, and the dogs come first.

Trip FAQs
Do I need any experience?
None with dogs. You need decent general fitness, a willingness to muck in, and to be comfortable outdoors in serious cold. Minimum age is 16.
How are the dogs looked after?
We only work with kennels that keep their dogs for life, publish their welfare standards and let you see the whole operation. Ask us anything — it's the first question we asked too.
