Overview
What this trip is
The Laugavegur runs from the hot springs of Landmannalaugar to the birch woods of Þórsmörk, and crams more scenery into four days than most countries manage in total: painted rhyolite hills, steaming vents, obsidian fields, black deserts and river crossings under two ice caps.
Iceland is expensive. The trail huts are especially expensive, and sell out a year ahead. So we camp beside them — we bring good tents, a cook tent and a guide who can actually cook — and the price drops by about a third.
You carry your own day kit and sleeping bag; the group food and tents move by highland bus where the road allows and on our backs where it doesn't.

Itinerary
Day 1Arrive Reykjavík
Evening briefing and kit check at our hostel. Anything you're missing can be rented in town.
Day 2Landmannalaugar to Hrafntinnusker12 km · ↑ 470 m · ↓ 50 m
Highland bus to Landmannalaugar (4 hrs), a quick dip in the hot river, then up through the Laugahraun lava and the steaming Stórihver vents to camp at Hrafntinnusker.
Day 3Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn12 km · ↑ 100 m · ↓ 590 m
Across the high plateau, often on snow, then the big descent of Jökultungur with the whole southern highlands laid out below. Camp by the lake.
Day 4Álftavatn to Emstrur16 km · ↑ 150 m · ↓ 200 m
Two river wades, then the black Mælifellssandur desert with green cones rising out of it. Evening walk to the Markarfljót canyon.
Day 5Emstrur to Þórsmörk15 km · ↑ 250 m · ↓ 500 m
Glacier views, the Þröngá river crossing and a last stretch through birch woods. Afternoon highland bus back to Reykjavík and a well-earned dinner out (own expense).
Day 6Depart
Trip ends after breakfast. Flybus to Keflavík runs all day.

Trip FAQs
Can I upgrade to the huts?
No — the huts are booked out long before we confirm departures, which is partly why this trip exists. You can use the hut toilets and buy a shower at most sites.
How hard are the river crossings?
Knee-deep at most in normal conditions, a few metres wide. Your guide picks the line and you cross together. After heavy rain we wait or reroute.
