Every trip carries a grade from one to five. They are not marketing; they are there to stop you booking the wrong holiday.
Grades 1 and 2: easy-going to moderate
Short walks or four to six hours a day on good paths. Our Iceland winter trip sits here. If you walk regularly at weekends, you are ready.
Grade 3: active
Five to seven hours a day, rougher ground, real weather, sometimes a loaded pack. Lofoten, the Kungsleden, the Laugavegur and husky sledding are grade 3. Test: two consecutive six-hour hill days at home, carrying what you would carry on the trip.
Grade 4: challenging
Long mountain days with more than 1,000 metres of ascent, plus either exposure, as on Triglav and the Tatras, or altitude, as on Toubkal. You need hill-walking experience and a head for heights. Test: a big day on a proper mountain ridge that you enjoyed rather than survived.
Grade 5: tough
We do not run any yet. When we do, we will ask about your experience before taking a booking.
Still unsure?
Ask us. We would much rather talk you into an easier trip than watch you suffer on a harder one.
