How to find cheap flights to the trailhead

19 September 2026

We leave flights out of our prices because you can nearly always beat what a tour operator pays. Here is how we do it ourselves.

Search by airport, not by city

Our joining instructions name the best airport for each trip, but look at the second-best too. Ljubljana is closest for Triglav, yet Venice, Trieste and Zagreb are all within a cheap shuttle ride and often half the fare.

Fly midweek, land the day before

Tuesday and Wednesday departures are usually cheapest. Arriving a day early costs one hostel night and removes all the stress of a delayed connection on the day the group meets.

Set alerts early, book around eight weeks out

Set a price alert as soon as you enquire. For short-haul European routes the sweet spot tends to be six to ten weeks before travel. Do not book anything non-refundable until we have confirmed your trip is running.

Pack for cabin bags

Every trip we run can be done from a 40 litre pack that fits budget-airline cabin rules, with boots on your feet. Trekking poles must go in the hold, so share one checked bag between friends or rent poles locally.

Not sure which trip fits?

Tell us your budget, your fitness and your dates. A real person will reply with an honest suggestion — including "not this one".
